RescueTime Productivity Timer FAQ

  • How exactly does the Productivity Timer work?
It's a small browser add-on (for Firefox or Chrome) add on that measures how you spend your attention in the browser. It only measures the single tab that is in focus (and will ignore other windows/tabs unless you bring them into focus). It also stops measuring when you've gone idle on your computer.
  • Does it cost anything?
Nope. It's totally free. We do have a premium offering that has some pretty nifty features which you might want to check out.
  • Where does all of this data go? What about privacy?
The data does get pushed up and aggregated on our servers. But we don't know your name or email address, so it's pretty challenging to associate this data with a person. You also have the power to delete any or all of your data at any time.
  • What can I do with this information?
We should you how much of your time and attention is spent on distracting sites and show you a comparison between you and the rest of the world. Our hope is that this helps motivate you to be more focused, which in turn will allow you to spend more time away from your computer doing stuff that you love. It can also sometimes be kind of funny. We also hope it's a great introduction to our deeper time management tool.
  • Is it available for other browsers besides Firefox and Chrome?
Sort of. We're working other browser plugins, but we also have a pretty rich time management app which not only allows you to track any browser you use, but also tracks non-browser applications (like Word, Photoshop, Excel, etc) and offline time (like phone calls and meetings). It also has some nifty alerting and blocking features to help you be more productive. And, of course, it can help entire business teams get smarter and more productive. You can check out a tour of it here.
