Are you taking part in National Novel Writing Month this year? We're curious to know just what kind of effort goes into writing 50,000 words in one month. So we're doing an experiment, and we'd like your help.
If you participate, you will learn some awesome things about your writing habits. You will also get access to some great tools to keep you motivated and focused on finishing your novel.

RescueTime lets you turn off distracting websites for a configurable period of time so you can focus on writing.
You can select specific times to dedicate to writing, and RescueTime will give you a friendly nudge if you aren't spending your time like you planned.
A personalized weekly time-report helps keep you aware of how you are spending your time, and if you're staying focused on your goal.
RescueTime works by using a lightweight application to securely and unobtrusively gather information about what applications, websites, and documents you are spending time with. RescueTime then crunches that data into interesting and actionable insights for you, presented on a web-dashboard and in a weekly email.
RescueTime takes your privacy VERY seriously. The only information that will be shared in this study will be high-level rollups of the entire group of participants. No personally identifiable information will ever be shared.
Throughout the experiment, we'll be taking a look at the group-wide stats, looking for patterns that shed light on how to be productive in a project like this. Here are some of the big questions we hope to gain insight on with this study. Of course, we'll share all the good stuff with you as we find it.
RescueTime is pretty hands-off by default. To take part in the study, you really don't have to do anything besides make sure RescueTime is running on your computer. (you should see the RescueTime icon in your Windows system tray or OS X menu bar). As we get into November, we'll provide you a link to a special report that you can use to understand your time spent writing.
