First, let’s establish a few things about you.
RescueTime personalizes your account to better suit the way you work.
Are you professionally employed or a student?
Everyone’s goals are a little bit different depending on what their current work situation is like.
What sort of degree are you pursuing?
These next couple of questions help RescueTime precategorize apps to suit your studies. (Don’t worry, you’ll be able to customize categorizations later!)
What is your primary course of study?
(select the one that applies most)
Computer / Information Sciences
Biological and Biomedical Sciences
Design (Graphic, Product, UI, UX, etc)
Communications / Marketing
This question helps RescueTime precategorize apps to suit your studies. (Don’t worry, you’ll be able to customize categorizations later!)
Do you keep a calendar that reflects your classes/meet-ups/etc?
If you keep a calendar, RescueTime will talk to it and inform you when you have a good opportunity for focusing.
How big is your company?
25,000 or more
The size of your company can impact how much time you have to focus each day. More coworkers can often mean more meetings and communication.
What type of worker are you?
Mostly an individual contributor (coding, designing, writing, etc)
Mostly a manager
A lot of both
If you’re a manager, you’ll most likely spend a lot more time in communication activities, which can be completely okay! We just need to adjust your goals for Focus Work accordingly.
My work covers the following areas:
(check the ones that apply most)
Other IT (Ops, Data Science, etc.)
Design (Graphic, Product, UI, UX, etc.)
Marketing or Content
Research / Science / Academic
RescueTime categorizes activities differently depending on the work you do. You’ll be able to easily customize specific apps later, but we want to get you started with a good foundation.
How many hours are in your target work week?
Don’t worry about overthinking this question – sticking with 40 hours is a good place to start if you’re not sure.
What time do you typically stop working each day?
These next few questions are about the time you *don’t* want to be working. We’re calling it Recharge Time.
What time do you start your work day? If you typically start before your scheduled time, choose the earlier time.
RescueTime is going to do its best to protect your recharge time from getting overrun with work.
Do you have regular days off?
I don't take days off
We believe that work and rest go together — you need good rest to do good work! That rest takes shape differently for everyone, and can change with time.
When you do have a day off (this could be a weekend, a holiday, a vacation, or another kind of personal day), how do you treat work on that day?
Try not to work at all
Occasionally check in with email/chat
Usually spend at least a few hours working
Treat it like any other work day
If you are having trouble with work/life balance, and want to improve on protecting your Recharge Time, we recommend choosing the first option.
Is your main focus tracking projects and creating timesheets? Or increasing productivity and blocking distractions?
This information helps us personalize your RescueTime experience. You can update your choice at any time in your app settings. No matter which you choose, you will have access to the same features.
